Pienamente camuffata per sfuggire alle foto spia dei più curiosi, la nuova BMW i3 Coupé si è vista circolare per le strade di Buckingham Palace, nel traffico del pieno Centro londinese. Una cosa
davvero insolita anche a causa della rilevanza delle camuffature, sebbene i più informati già sapessero che l'auto fosse stata presentata come prototipo allo scorso Salone di Los Angeles 2012,
con un'anticipazione molto più sportiva rispetto a quello che sarà il reale modello di BMW i3 introdotto sul mercato.
Si tratta dunque ancora di una Concept Car dalla lunghezza di circa 4 metri, spinta da un motore elettrico collocato nella parte posteriore della vettura, e collegato alle sole ruote posteriori.
Esso è in grado di sviluppare una potenza di ben 170 cavalli, con valori di coppia che si aggirano intorno ai 250 Nm, e, dal momento che si tratta di un'auto dal peso veramente contenuto (grazie
all'utilizzo di materiali compositi), il risultato è la capacità di registrare uno 0-100 Km/h di meno di otto secondi.
Inoltre, questa compatta elettrica di BMW dovrebbe offrire la possibilità di montare un range extender, al fine di incrementare notevolmente l’autonomia della vettura ben oltre i circa 150
chilometri previsti dalla trazione esclusivamente elettrica.
Molte sono le ipotesi avanzate per fornire una spiegazione plausibile del misterioso quanto insolito evento, ma forse la più probabile sarebbe quella che la nuova BMW i3 sia stata utilizzata come
vettura per alcuni test drive dalla nuova concessionaria BMW di Park Lane, ove sono esposti anche altri prototipi in attesa dell’arrivo delle versioni stradali che potranno essere acquistate dai
clienti.
Altri hanno invece ipotizzato che si tratti di un test da parte dei tecnici BMW effettuato per testare l'effettiva autonomia e le reali prestazioni nel traffico di città della nuova i3 Coupé.
